Chemical and thermal description of the environment of the Genesis hydrothermal vent community (13 degrees N, EPR) ArchiMer
Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Caprais, Jean-claude; Briand, Patrick; Gaill, Françoise; Shillito, Bruce; Desbruyeres, Daniel.
The objective of this study is to describe the chemical and physical environment surrounding the vent organisms at the Genesis site (EPR, 2640 m). The main chimney is colonized by Riftia pachyptila, fishes Zoarcidae and crabs Bythograeidae. The top of the smoker is covered with tubes of polychaetes Alvinellidae, the frontier zone by limpet gastropods. Temperature measurements and water sampling were made on an axis along the chimney. The environment was characterized using relationships between chemical concentrations and temperature to provide a chemo-thermal model of the site. Discrete temperature ranges were 1-1.6 degrees C in sea water, 1.6-10 degrees C among Riftia plumes (up to 25 degrees C at the tube base), 7-91 degrees C close to the alvinellid...

Distribution and behavior of dissolved hydrogen sulfide in hydrothermal plumes ArchiMer
Radford Knoery, Joel; German, C; Charlou, Jean-luc; Donval, Jean-pierre; Fouquet, Yves.
Through the deep ocean, hydrothermal plumes disperse high concentrations of key chemical tracers including He-3, CH4, Mn, Fe, H2S, etc. This paper focuses on the distribution and behavior of total dissolved sulfide (sulfide hereafter) in hydrothermal plumes to show that its plume concentration decreases to subnanomolar a few kilometers from the vents. We also report on sulfide removal rates determined at in situ conditions; we observe that they are two orders of magnitude greater than for open ocean seawater, consistent with sulfide being detected only in the vicinity of hydrothermal vents. From our observations, we infer that the sole presence of sulfide in hydrothermal plumes locates active venting at the kilometer scale.

Modelling of the biofiltration of reduced sulphur compounds through biotrickling filters connected in series: Effect of H2S Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Silva,Javier; Morales,Marjorie; Cáceres,Manuel; Morales,Paulina; Aroca,Germán.
Background: The behaviour of two biotrickling filters connected in serie (BTF) inoculated with Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Thiobacillus thioparus, biodegrading hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and dimethyl sulphide (DMS) simultaneously were studied. A model which considers gas to liquid mass transfer and biooxidation in the biofilm attached to the support is developed. Additionally, a fixed bed biotrickling filter where the microorganism is immobilized in a biofilm which degrades a mixture of H2S and DMS is implemented. Validation of the model was carried out using experimental data obtained at different H2S and DMS loads. Results: The inhibitory effect caused by the presence of H2S on the DMS is observed, which is evidenced by the decrease of the DMS removal...
